Ever clicked "buy" and instantly thought, "Wait, why did I just do that?" A pre-trade checklist for forex is a short list of questions you answer before every single trade, so you only act when your plan says yes and not when your emotions say "now!"
For women who are new to trading, it's one of the simplest habits you can build. It takes about two minutes, costs nothing and quietly prevents a lot of expensive mistakes.
What Is a Pre-Trade Checklist and Why Does It Work?
A pre-trade checklist is a set of yes-or-no questions you work through before entering a trade. If any answer is "no," you don't take the trade.
Pilots use checklists before every flight, even after thousands of hours. Not because they've forgotten how to fly, but because under pressure, even experienced people skip steps.
Trading is the same. Excitement, fear of missing out and the wish to win back a loss all make us rush. A checklist slows you down at the exact moment slowing down matters.
It also helps you learn. When every trade follows the same steps, you can look back and see which part of the process worked and which didn't.
What Should a Forex Pre-Trade Checklist Include? 10 Questions to Ask
Here's a starter list. Adjust it to match your own trading plan:
- Is this setup in my plan? If you can't point to the rule, it's not a trade. It's a hunch.
- Am I trading my chosen pair and session? Stick to what you've studied.
- What is the trend on the higher timeframe? Know which way the bigger picture is moving before you trade the smaller one.
- Is price at a level that matters? Support, resistance or another area you marked in advance.
- Do I have confirmation? For example, a candle close that supports your idea.
- Where is my stop loss? It should sit at the point where your idea is proven wrong, not at a number you're comfortable with.
- What is my position size? Work it out from your stop distance and your risk per trade, such as 1% of your account.
- Is my reward at least twice my risk? If the maths doesn't work, skip it. Our guide to the risk reward ratio explains why.
- Is there major news coming? Big announcements can move prices sharply and cause slippage.
- How do I feel right now? Tired, angry, bored or chasing a loss? That's your answer. Step away.
Print this out or keep it in your notes app. Tick every box, every time.
Don't worry if ten questions feels like a lot at first. After a few weeks it becomes second nature, and most of the list takes seconds to check. The aim isn't perfection. It's making sure you never enter a trade without knowing why.
Why Is Question 10 the Most Important One for Women Traders?
Because the technical questions are the easy ones. The hard one is the emotional check-in.
Many of us carry extra pressure. We're juggling work, family and a to-do list as long as our arm, and then trying to make clear trading decisions in the gaps. That's real, and it's nothing to be embarrassed about.
Some warning signs that it's a "no trade" day:
- You're trading to "make back" yesterday's loss.
- You haven't slept well or you're rushing between tasks.
- You feel a strong urge to act, with no setup in sight.
- You're about to break your own rules "just this once."
If any of these are true, close the chart. Missing a trade costs you nothing. A rushed one can cost you your whole week. If this sounds familiar, you might find our post on how to stop overtrading helpful.
How Does TFW Global Help Women Build Good Trading Habits?
Writing the checklist is easy. Following it when a market is moving fast is the part most people struggle with, especially when they're doing it alone.
That's why communities like TFW Global exist. TFW Global, formerly Forex for Women, is a women-only community where members trade alongside coaches such as Jenn Eusterwiemann and Amanda Custer, who share how they apply their own rules in real time.
You can ask, "Does this look like a valid setup to you?" and get an honest answer from women who've been there. No bro-culture, no jargon and no one making you feel silly for asking.
Having people around you who hold you to your process makes the checklist far easier to stick to. We go into more detail on building that foundation in our trading plan for beginners guide.
What we teach: A checklist isn't there to stop you trading. It's there to make sure the trades you take are ones you'd be proud to explain.
How Can You Start Using a Pre-Trade Checklist Today?
You don't need to wait until you feel "ready." Here's how to begin this week:
- Copy the ten questions above into a notebook or notes app.
- Remove or change any that don't fit your plan, and add one of your own.
- Use it on your demo account first. Tick every box before every trade.
- Record your answers in a journal. Our guide on how to keep a trading journal can help.
- After two weeks, review the trades where you skipped a question. Compare their results with the rest.
That last step is where the learning happens. Most women are surprised by how clearly the pattern shows up.
